A: DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD) DEGREE PROGRAMMES
PhD is a “taught doctorate” with four semesters of coursework, followed by a Comprehensive research proposal defense in a departmental seminar. This is followed by thesis writing and a viva voce examination which shall take place only after the Senate Higher Degree Committee and Senate have been satisfied that the thesis submitted by the candidate is considered by the examiners to be of an acceptable standard.
1.0 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN LAW
2.1 PhD IN LAW PROGRAMME BY THESIS
2.2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) A Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from a recognized university, with a GPA of not less than 3.5 at LL.M level.
ii) The LL.M degree must have been pursued by coursework and dissertation. The coursework part should have covered not less than 6 units of study.
iii) The applicant should have done advanced research methodology at LL.M level. However, deficiencies in Research Methodology skills can be remedied in the course of doing the PhD study.
iv) The applicant must have a practical or academic experience of not less than 5 years, in the area of law he/she wants to pursue the PhD degree.
v) The applicant must have done research work or publication, or both, in the area of law he/she wants to do the PhD.
2.3 PhD IN LAW PROGRAMME BY COURSEWORK AND DISSERTATION:

i) A Master of Laws (LL.M) Degree from a recognized University, with a GPA of not less than 3.5 at LL.M level.

B: MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMMES
1.0 FACULTY OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
1.1 MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
The two years MBA degree programme equips students with skills and understanding of the administration of public and private enterprises.
The MBA programme offers specialization in Finance,
Human Resource Management and Marketing Management
1.2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) An Appropriate first degree, upper second class or above
ii) An Appropriate first degree, lower second class with minimum of one year of work experience.
iii) Holders of Postgraduate Diploma in related field.
iv) An Advanced Diploma with upper second class or above, from recognized institution.
v) Applicants with professional qualification such as CPA (T), CSP (T), or ACCA holders with background in business.
1.3 POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN ACCOUNTANCY (PGDA)
1.4 POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN FINANCE (PGDF)
1.5 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) Applicants with a minimum of lower second class in any Advanced Diploma in business related studies of duration not less than three years, on full time basis from a recognized institution of higher learning.
ii) First university degree holders in related fields with a minimum of lower second class.
2.0 FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND COMMUNICATIONS
2.1 MASTER OF ARTS IN MASS COMMUNICATION
2.2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) Holders of Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communication (BAMC) or Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism with at least upper second class division from any institution of higher learning recognized by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).
ii) Holders of Advanced Diploma in Journalism from any recognized institution of higher learning with a GPA of not less than 3.5 or with a Postgraduate Diploma in any area of study.
iii) Holders of lower second class with a minimum of three years relevant work experience in a media institution.
2.3 MASTER OF ARTS IN SOCIOLOGY
This is a two years programme which aims at producing social scientists that will be dedicated academically and committed to the examination of society and the social world. The program offers four areas of specializations: Medical Sociology, Sociology of Organizations, Environmental Sociology, and Rural Sociology.
2.4 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) Holders of Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with first class or second upper division.
ii) Holders of Post Graduate Diploma in Health Care Science, Social Work, Environmental Studies and Community Development.
iii) Holders of lower second class or pass degree with a minimum of three years work experience in organizations and or government.
2.5 MASTER OF ARTS IN ECONOMICS
The program is to enable candidates to understand, analyze and apply advanced micro and macro-economic theories in the current environment that will enable them to meet the global economic challenges.
2.6 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) Holders of Bachelor of Arts in Economics with an upper second class degree.
ii) Lower second class of not less than 3.0 GPA for an applicant from SAUT-Economics department will be the minimum entry requirements.
iii) Applicants from other universities will have to meet the minimum requirements for an upper second class.
3.0 SCHOOL OF LAW
3.1 MASTER OF LAWS
The Master of Laws (LL.M) intends to accomplish the following goals: developing candidates’ mastery of the general foundations principles and methodologies of law; developing among candidates an advanced and thorough understanding of key issues and current trends in the chosen area of specialization; developing candidates’ analytical skills and critical understanding, in order to systematically and creatively deal with complex legal issues in the chosen area of specialization, cultivating the capacity to undertake independent study in order to build the candidates’ ability to function in any of the four main tracks of the legal professional, namely academia, administration of justice, advisory functions and administrative or executive work.
The Master of Laws Degree shall be designated according to the area of specialization, as follows:
LL.M in International Law
LL.M in Economic Law
LL.M in Human Rights Law
LL.M General
3.2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) Holders of Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B) from any institution of higher learning recognized by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) with a G.P.A of at least 3.0.
ii) Candidates will need to provide proof to the School of Law about a work experience or practice in any aspect of law. Proof of any academic works in the form of short training, research, outreach programmes; etc undertaken after graduation will provide additional weight.
4.0 FACULTY OF EDUCATION
4.1 MASTER’S DEGREE IN HIGHER EDUCATION MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
The programme seeks to attract new and senior managers in education institutions in the region. The programme envisions the participation of a pool of institutions whereby students and senior managers shall get skills that will enable them undertake strategic planning as well as understand the environment of the Higher Education (HE).
4.2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) Holders of a good first degree, preferably in related discipline with at least lower second class with a G.P.A of 2.7 or above.
ii) Have 5-10 years leadership or management experience at least at middle level (academic or non-academic).
iii) Be able to write proficiently in English.
iv) Have the aspiration to senior roles in University Management.
v) Holders of Advanced Diploma from any institution of higher learning with a GPA of not less than 3.5 (On a 5- point scale) and a Postgraduate Diploma in any area of study.
4.3 MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING
This is a full-time programme. The full time will comprise four semester’s equivalent of two academic years as per the official university calendar.
4.4 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) Holders of Bachelor Degree in Education (BED) such as BED Maths, Science, Arts, Adult Education, Early Childhood, Education Psychology etc with at least Upper Second Class.
ii) An equivalent qualification from any recognized university in and outside the region.
4.5 MASTER OF ARTS IN HISTORY
The programme aims at providing academic, professional and specialized hands-on skill training in the teaching of history, historical and cultural sites management, heritage conservation, tourism and hospitality management, historical record management, archives and documentation, government, leadership and administrative history.
4.6 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) An appropriate first degree, upper second class or above.
ii) An appropriate first degree, lower second with minimum of two years work experience.
iii) Holders of Postgraduate Diploma in related field.
iv) An Advanced Diploma, upper second class or above, from a recognized institution.
4.7 MASTER OF ARTS IN LINGUISTICS
The aim of the MA Linguistics programme is to foster scholarship and research in the linguistics discipline, both for students who are planning on continuing with PhD programme in linguistics and for those who will be seeking professional work in a range of fields for which a background in linguistics is required.
4.8 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
i) Applicants to the MA Linguistics programme must hold an upper second class in the Bachelor’s degree with a specialization in linguistics or language studies from a recognized and accredited university.
ii) Holders of Bachelor of Arts Degree with specialization in linguistics or languages who have lower second class with minimum of three years work experience.
